This powerful sacrament is not only for the dying. Nor is the celebration an indication that one is in imminent danger of death. It is truly a sacrament of healing, not to be put off until we are so ill that physical or psychological healing is impossible. While often celebrated for those who have physical ailments, it can also be celebrated with those who find themselves with a spiritual or emotional crisis.
As with all sacraments that are a personal encounter with God, there is a communal dimension. Here at St. Benedict we offer masses of anointing quarterly.
However, whenever the need arises, the priests are on call to minister to a person’s need in a time of pain and suffering. This sacrament can be received more than once, especially if a person’s condition fails to improve.
