Quick Update

10-09-2020Weekly Flocknote MessageFr. James Aboyi, V.C.

It’s great to be back at the parish. For the past 12 days, I attended the International Catholic Stewardship Council Annual Conference (ICSC). I consider myself blessed to be selected by the Diocese to be among the few priests who were invited to attend the conference. The overall focus of the conference this year were the themes of Discipleship, Evangelization, Stewardship and Mission. The goal was for the participants to listen to different professionals and share resources available to develop new strategies to adapt and minister effectively in the current situation we find ourselves. It was good for me to hear from so many presenters from around the country, and to know that we, in our parish community, are not alone in dealing with the stress arising from the current political tension, economic stress and the Pandemic. Over the next few weeks I will be meeting with our parish staff and others to discuss some of the new ideas I have learned from the conference in order to discern the best pastoral strategies that will meet the needs of our parish.

Catholics in Public Square

On Saturday, October 3rd, our Bishop, Thomas Olmsted held a virtual legislative seminar on “Catholics in the Public Square.” I thank our parishioners who followed this live event. If you missed it, I encourage you to watch the video clip below or on our parish Facebook page. I found this event very enlightening. The presenters were amazing, they literally blew my mind! The video is about 2 hrs long. If you are not able to watch it all at once, make sure you watch the presentations by the renowned law professor Helen Alvaré and religious freedom expert Alan Sears. I assure you, you will be captivated by their presentations. Click here to watch the presentation.

New Encyclical by Pope Francis

Pope Francis signed a new Encyclical on Saturday, October 3rd, entitled, “Fratelli Tutti” (Fraternity and Social Friendship). In this encyclical, Pope Francis emphasizes that God our Father has created every human being with equal sanctity and dignity, equal rights and duties, and calls us to form a single human family in which to live as brothers and sisters. The Pope reminds us that “God’s plan for humanity has implications for every aspect of our lives — from how we treat one another in our personal relationships, to how we organize and operate our societies and economies.” Read the full text here.
