When the Gospel Sets a Fire

"I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!" (Luke 12:49).

These words from Jesus may sound unsettling. We often associate Him with peace, comfort, and healing- and rightly so. But here, Jesus reminds us of something else: the Gospel is not tame. It is not neutral. It ignites. It disrupts. It transforms.

This fire is not destruction- it is purification. It is the fire of truth, of conviction, of love that burns away compromise and calls us to holiness. When Christ sets our hearts ablaze, we can no longer remain lukewarm. We are either with Him or we're not.

The Gospel does not always bring external peace. In fact, it often leads to division- sometimes even within our own homes. Why? Because the light of Christ challenges every darkness. It exposes what is false, purifies what is selfish, and demands a response. And when some say yes and others say no, division naturally follows.

Jeremiah knew this kind of fire. In the first reading, he is thrown into a cistern- not for doing wrong, but for telling the truth. Prophets are rarely applauded. But truth is not dependent on popularity. And even in the mud, Jeremiah is not abandoned. God raises up a courageous advocate, Ebed-melech, to pull him out.

St. Paul, in the second reading, reminds us that we are not alone: "We are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses." Saints, martyrs, everyday believers- men and women who persevered when the fire tested their faith. They ran the race, endured the cross, and fixed their eyes on Jesus. So must we.

Following Christ will cost us something. It may cost us approval. It may cost us comfort. In some places, it may cost people their freedom or even their lives. But it will never cost us our hope. That is secured in the One who endured opposition, bore the cross, and now reigns in glory.

The Gospel is not meant to decorate our lives. It is meant to consume them. To set us on fire.

So let the fire burn. Let it purify, not destroy. Let it kindle courage, not fear. And above all, let it spread- from heart to heart, from soul to soul- until the world is ablaze with the light and love of Christ.
