The Treasure Worth Waiting For

08-10-2025Weekly ReflectionFr. Augustine Acheme, VC

“Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom.” (Luke 12:32). With these words, Jesus speaks not only comfort but mission. God is not reluctant in His generosity; He delights in giving us the kingdom. But to receive it, we must live with hearts awake, hands ready, and eyes fixed on what matters most.

The Gospel tells us to “gird your loins and light your lamps”- a call to vigilance, not out of fear, but love. The faithful servants aren’t anxious. They are expectant. They stay ready, not because of dread, but because they know something glorious is coming. The Master’s return is not a threat- it’s a wedding celebration. And astonishingly, the Master will serve the servants.

Jesus asks: Where is your treasure? Because “where your treasure is, there also will your heart be” (Luke 12:34). This isn’t about losing joy in the present- it’s about anchoring our lives in what truly lasts.

The second reading from Hebrews offers the blueprint for such living: faith. Abraham didn’t see the full promise in his lifetime, yet he obeyed, trusted, and walked forward. He lived as a “stranger and alien on earth,” because his eyes were fixed on a better homeland- a heavenly one (Hebrews 11:13-16). Like Abraham, we are called to trust God not because we see the whole path, but because we know the One who leads us.

St. Augustine once said, “God is always trying to give good things to us, but our hands are too full to receive them.” That is the challenge of this Gospel: to let go of what passes, so we can be free to receive what is eternal.

The first reading from Wisdom recalls the night of Passover- when God’s people, in faith and unity, awaited deliverance. They didn’t know exactly how or when salvation would come. But they believed, they watched, and they waited.

We are not waiting for a vague hope. We are waiting for a Person- for Christ Himself. And when He comes, will He find us faithful? Will He find us still hoping, still loving, still serving?

“Much will be required of the person entrusted with much” (Luke 12:48). And you, dear friend, have been entrusted with the Gospel. So stay awake. Be generous. Live ready. The kingdom is coming- indeed, it is already within reach.
